How To Clean Camera Bag
Camera Bag Cleaning
Camera Bag Cleaning
Apr 12, 2005
Does anyone know how to clean a Lowepro camera bag?
The interior is spotless but the exterior is filthy. Do I send
it to have it dry cleaned or do I take a scrubbing brush to it?
Obviously I don't want to ruin the bag in the process.

Re: Camera Bag Cleaning
Most cordura packs are best cleaned by hand. Use a mild soap & soak it in warm water for about 30 mins. Scrub vigorously w/ a brush. Rinse. Soak again over night w/ mild soap. Drain water, replace w/warm, soak 5 min then scrub again. Rinse, rinse, rinse until you're willing to drink the water. Let hang dry outside in shade or in breezy area inside. Make sure it gets completely dry or else you risk mildew, the cordura will then delaminate & be ruined.

Re: Camera Bag Cleaning
My bags have never gotten so dirty that I couldn't wipe them clean with a damp cloth. I'd try that first before getting it really wet.
Also, even if the inside looks clean, I recommend vacuuming it out every now and then to remove dust and grit.

I second that
I would also try to prevent it from getting totally soaked. Using a damp cloth and a vacuum cleaner is what I do also.
Kind regards,
Koos.
Well I still have not received a reply from Lowepro about how to
clean my camera bag, so I took matters into my own hands. I sprayed
the bag thoroughly with spray and wash, scrubbed it with a scrub brush
and put it into the washing machine. After the initial wash I ran it through
the rinse and spin cycle 3 times. and have now hung it outside for the
day to dry. My initial concern was the foam that is built into the bag,
but it seems to have come out OK. The bag looks brand new, and it definitely
smells better. It was initially a deep blue and after the years and the mileage
it has on it it was more brown than blue. After it is completely dry I plan to
scotch guard it and voila brand new bag. Now I have a nice new home for
my D2X when it finally shows up.
While I have no specific recommendation regarding ScotchGuard, I advise using no Alchohol, Ketone, or other chemicals inside the bag.
I have had a bad experience with camera bodies whose applique coverings delaminated from the bodies in response to long term absorbtion of vapors from alcohol and other cleaners that I had naively used inside the bag.
I wouldn't worry about cleaners used outside the bag, unless the bag's fabric is permeable to those fluids or vapors.

I'd recommend ...
the nix wax h2o replelant over scotch gaurd, available at any good sporting goods store (rei). Also your lucky the washer didn't screw it up. Padding & belts/straps often catch under the agitator & get ruined. If u use a front loader you're OK.
